i’ve already gone about telling you how much I hate the misuse of kickstarter for things like stupid, pointless documentaries . Now, listen to a guy say pretty much the same things, but in a more intelligent and reasonable way other then me just spewing hate!
Kickstarter, the website dedicated to helping people start up projects through volunteer backing, has grown in popularity since its launch in 2008. The biggest Kickstarter project thus far, at least as known by this reporter, was Double Fine’s Kickstarter to back a good old fashioned adventure game that they couldn’t get a publisher for, which raised 3.3 Million dollars.
Kickstarter has seen a wide variety of projects, from up-and-coming indie game developers to artists hoping to get backing to help their art, but this by far is the worst use of it so far. The user Anita Sarkeesian posted a Kickstarter project in hopes to raise money for her youtube show, I shit you not. The project is titled Tropes vs Women in Video Games, and hopes to raise money for “production costs, equipment, games and downloadable content” and has reached far beyond it’s goal of $6,000 to a surprising $23,000 total. On the surface it seems to be a good cause, the feminist movement has been going for many years, though sometimes the extremists can be overbearing in their cause and come off as overly antagonistic. The issue here lies not in the cause, but with the means. Anita Sarkeesian already has a previous feminist youtube show (see: http://www.feministfrequency.com/ ) that she’s produced, and she didn’t need $6,000 for that one, that’s for sure. The bare bones fact for this is that she’s asking for $6,000 to buy video games, and while I admit that video games are expensive, most of them you can get for relatively cheap or free, cause lets face it, it’s very easy to get free video games in these days, and you don’t even have to start a bogus Kickstarter project to do so. In the words of Peter Griffin, “That really grinds my gears.”
