Prometheus: The Prequel The Review

Prometheus: The Prequel The Review

Let it be known to all readers that I have no knowledge, that’s a grand total of 0%, of the Aliens mythos past the fact that Aliens, Face Huggers and Predators exist. So going into this movie, I didn’t expect to need to know any of this knowledge, seeing as it was a prequel I figured I’d learn things that I could then apply to my soon to be started Aliens Franchise marathon. Walking out of the movie however, I’m still not sure if knowing any of that knowledge would have helped me understand the movie anymore. While it was good and entertaining, I was confused as **** for a better half the movie.

The movie basically starts off with the crew of the Prometheus en route for their destination, which they believe will be the home of the beings that created them. Upon arriving to the planet they find a massive structure filled with strange capsules and corpses. Of course, all hell starts to break loose after this point. I’ll try not to spoil anything, but you can probably see where this is going. There isn’t a lot of action in the movie, there some suspense but nothing terrible. There is some humor in it (mostly from the ship captain and the creepy robot David) and, well, aliens. My biggest qualm with the movie is there isn’t much of a sense of ending. The movie hits it’s big climax extremely close to the end, and after wards it just seems to drag on. It’s almost as if the movie is like “Alright, check out this climax! now you guys can go…after this…..and this……and this……alright, right after this……one more and you can go…….last time I promise……ok after this you can go…..alright you can leave”. Also, as I said, I was pretty confused through out the movie. I missed some, maybe 3-5 minutes near the beginning, and I was confused on a number of things by the end, both based off the humans and the aliens, but once the movie ended and I could take a moment to start thinking about everything, I started to piece it together. Over all the movie was good, but it didn’t fully meet my expectations. There was enough in the movie to keep my attention, but that was about it. There was about one moment in the entire movie that I was really entranced about what was going to happen next, but a great movie needs more then one moment. Over all I’d give the movie a B, it is a good movie, and if you’re a fan of the series I’m sure you’ll like it better then I did, I just expected more I guess.

    • Don’t… His review is very on point. I felt pretty much the exact same way. I was expecting a lot from this movie, not as an Aliens fan–of which I’m not–but as a sci-fi nerd who really loved that last chilling trailer that was released. After seeing the movie, I was just… unfulfilled. It gives you a lot of questions, no answers, and while some movies pull that off well, this feels uneven. And the questions you have contradict others. Ugh.

It’s not bad… by all means, it’s presented well. But the story and characters don’t stand out as well as you’ll hope.

  1. The movie was stunning as far as cinematography, but the storyline seemed broken and the many of the characters kind of acted like imbeciles.

“…and if you’re a fan of the series I’m sure you’ll like it better then I did…” the hubs and I were rather annoyed that this false prequel would tease us with connections to the original Alien movie but then tear apart those connections.

I agree with the B rating. The movie has its issues, but the great visuals make it worth seeing; it’s just a matter of how much you want to pay!
